Panel at the ABRI National Meeting

Date/Location: 8th Seminar on Undergraduate and Graduate Studies in International Relations of the Brazilian Association of International Relations (ABRI), held at Campus I of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), João Pessoa (PB), Brazil, 31 August – 4 September 2026. The panel took place on Thursday, 3 September 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., in room CCSA 235, within the Thematic Area “International Relations Theory” (Session 111).

Description: Panel “Research, teaching and outreach on European integration in Brazil: horizons of action from the Jean Monnet Chairs”, devoted to assessing the impact of Jean Monnet Actions on teaching, research and outreach activities in Brazil. The panel placed the Centre’s experience in dialogue with other Jean Monnet initiatives hosted by Brazilian institutions, allowing a comparative reflection on how EU-funded actions are institutionalised in the country and on the role of the EU as an actor in cultural, public and scientific diplomacy.

The Centre was represented by Prof. Rafael Miranda and by Isabela Agostinelli dos Santos (FECAP), who presented, respectively, the articulation between teaching, research and outreach in the Centre’s Jean Monnet activities and the mentoring programme on Brazil–EU relations. The panel also brought together representatives of the Jean Monnet Chairs hosted at ESPM and of other Brazilian institutions, consolidating a national network of Jean Monnet beneficiaries.

Norsk Hydro – “Value Chains, Stakeholders and Human Rights: Why the Future of Business Depends on the Relationships We Build”

Prof. Rafael Miranda, Co-Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights at FECAP, was invited to deliver a keynote presentation as part of the Supplier Recognition Event of Norsk Hydro’s Sustainability in the Value Chain Programme, organised in partnership with Instituto Ethos and held in Belém, Pará. The event brought together representatives of Norsk Hydro, Instituto Ethos and companies from Hydro’s supply chain, with a focus on sustainability, ESG practices and corporate responsibility.

Under the title “Value Chains, Stakeholders and Human Rights: Why the Future of Business Depends on the Relationships We Build,” Prof. Miranda discussed the relationship between Business and Human Rights and the management of corporate value chains, highlighting the importance of understanding relationships with suppliers and other stakeholders as part of responsible business conduct.

Launch of the “Guide for companies: protection of human rights and environmental defenders”

Developed by Instituto Ethos under the AFD-funded project, covering human rights due diligence, dialogue with communities, territorial risk management and responsible business conduct in contexts of socio-environmental vulnerability.

Launched at The Festival +DH 2026, held on 1-2 July 2026 in Belém (Pará), as part of the official program of the II Amazon Climate Week.

DH+ Festival

The Festival +DH 2026 was held on 1-2 July 2026 in Belém (Pará), as part of the official program of the II Amazon Climate Week, which seeks to consolidate itself as a permanent legacy of COP30. The first day took place at the Sesc Ver-o-Peso Auditorium, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and was open to both member and non-member companies; the second day consisted of an activity reserved for invited guests.

The first day of the Festival gathered 68 participants.

The event was organised by Instituto Ethos in institutional partnership with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights (FECAP). Additional partners included the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Mercado Net Zero (MNZ) and Sesc Fecomércio Senac, with sponsorship from Hydro (Gold Sponsor) and SEST SENAT (Bronze Sponsor).

Holding the Festival in the capital of Pará placed the Business and Human Rights agenda at the centre of the post-COP30 debate, connecting the protection of human rights and environmental defenders, social participation, transparency, the strengthening of territories, governance, socio-environmental integrity and corporate responsibility. Belém, host city of COP30 in November 2025 and some 2,490 km from São Paulo, also allowed the Centre to extend its outreach well beyond the South-East of Brazil.

Seminar “Multilateralism of labour and human rights: the example of the coffee value chain”

The Centre’s Co-Director, Professor Cláudia Marconi, took part in the seminar promoted by the Embassy of Germany in Brazil at the Goethe-Institut in Salvador (Bahia), as part of the Euro-Brazil Democracy Forum – a series of conferences and lectures held in several Brazilian cities on democracy, human rights, the rule of law and sustainable development.

Opened by the German Ambassador to Brazil, Ms. Bettina Cadenbach, the seminar brought together international organisations, the productive sector, governments and civil society to discuss labour rights, human rights and socio-environmental responsibility in the coffee value chain, covering “Regulation & Human Rights” from national, bilateral and multilateral perspectives, an overview of responsibility for human and labour rights, and the panel “Environment as a Human Right”. The activity connected the Centre’s work on human rights due diligence and EU norm-making activities directly to an audience of exporters, buyers, certification bodies and public authorities.

Annual Conference of the Global Business and Human Rights Scholars Association and Teaching Business and Human Rights Forum

Panelists were scheduled to speak for about 15-20 minutes each, followed by a 20-minute Q&A session to advance the debate. The discussion explored the interdisciplinary contours and content of the Business and Human Rights (BHR) field. 

Advanced Workshop — Human Rights and the Environment

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence participated in a course organized by the Ethos Institute, which featured an exclusive activity for members of the Human Rights, Integrity, and Environment Working Groups (invitation-only event).

EULAS Rio de Janeiro Conference

Date/Location: 23-25 March 2026, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil. EULAS (EU–Latin America Academic Synergies) Conference, entitled “Euro-Latin America & Caribbean Cooperation in Governing Climate and Biodiversity and Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”.

On day one, Professor Claudia Marconi was part of the Workshop ‘Research Funding’. Chair: Jacint Jordana (IBEI) Participants: Gustavo Muller (KU Leuven), Claudia Alvarenga Marconi (PUC-SP/FECAP), José Briceño (UNAM).

On the second day, Professor Claudia Marconi participated in Panel 4: European Green Deal and its external effects with a paper entitled “Brazil’s contestation of EU regulatory pressure on the Business and Human Rights agenda: the continuum between environmental protection and green protectionism under tension”, in co-authorship with Julia Battistuzzi Penachioni (USP).

COP30 and People’s Summit – Participation and Monitoring of Climate and Human Rights Discussions

Prof. Rafael Miranda, Co-Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights at FECAP, participated in person in COP30 and related activities in Belém, following discussions across the official conference programme and the People’s Summit. His participation included activities promoted by the UN Global Compact and the Swiss-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, as well as broader discussions on climate change, business responsibility and human rights.

His participation was financially supported by the FRONTIERS project, led by Prof. Karin Buhmann, from Copenhagen Business School and a member of the Centre’s international network of collaborators. This support enabled the Centre’s direct presence in one of the main international forums for climate governance and further strengthened the cooperation between the Centre and its international academic network.

IV Sustainability Panel – SWISSCAM

The Centre’s co-director, professor Cláudia Marconi, took part in the IV Sustainability Panel, “Global challenges for good business practices in a changing world”, organised for the fourth consecutive year by the Sustainability Committee of the Swiss-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (SWISSCAM) and the Consulate General of Switzerland in São Paulo, held at the Swiss Consular Residence, with the presence of the Ambassador of Switzerland to Brazil, Hanspeter Mock. 

In her intervention, Prof. Marconi presented the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights as a pioneering initiative in the Global South co-financed by the European Union, bringing together Brazilian and European professors, researchers and practitioners in a cooperation network. She described the Center’s two lines of action – academic training, including student and faculty exchanges, and professional development for the private sector in partnership with Instituto Ethos – and its objective of mainstreaming human rights into business structures and curricula.

The panel also gathered representatives of Trench Rossi Watanabe, Zurich Insurance, UBS BB, Nestlé Brazil, Fundação Dom Cabral, the University of St. Gallen and Instituto Ekos Brasil, placing the Centre in direct dialogue with an audience of Swiss and Brazilian companies. 

Jean Monnet Brazil Network Meeting

From September 1st to 3rd , 2025, Co-Director Cláudia Marconi represented the Center at activities bringing together researchers, faculty members, and specialists from across the country dedicated to teaching and research on the European Union.

Participation in the International Congress of the Professional Master’s Program in Corporate and Business Law at UNISINOS

On August 27, 28, and 29, UNISINOS hosted the 1st International Congress of the Professional Master’s Program in Corporate and Business Law. Co-director Cláudia Marconi participated in the opening ceremony.

DH+ Festival

Held on 13 August 2025 at Vibra São Paulo, as part of the Conferência Ethos 2025 (12–13 August 2025), which brought together more than 2,300 registered attendees, consolidating the event as one of the main venues for debate on sustainability, corporate governance and human rights in Brazil. The Festival day gathered 3,180 participants at Vibra São Paulo, the largest concert venue in Latin America, giving the session a national reach.

This edition marked a novelty: the DH+ Festival was integrated into the second day of the Conferência Ethos program, held at the Vibra São Paulo venue. Created in 2021, the Festival returned in a special format, reinforcing its mission of connecting civil society, the business sector and public authorities around strategic dialogue, culture, evidence and commitment to strengthening human rights.

In partnership with Instituto Ethos and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights (FECAP), with support from the European Commission, Festival +DH 2025 promoted panels on pressing topics:

• “The cost of inequality and the urgency of corporate human rights governance”
• “DEI and the National Care Policy: shared responsibility and changes in the world of work”
• “Environmental Defenders in focus: challenges, perspectives and pathways for socio-environmental protection”

CoE co-director Prof. Rafael Miranda spoke on the first panel, representing the Centre’s contribution to the corporate governance and human rights debate. Alongside him, the panel was moderated by Andréa Álvares (Chair of the Deliberative Board of Instituto Ethos) and included Michael França (Insper) and Luciana Nicola (Itaú Unibanco), illustrating the multistakeholder dialogue between academia, the business sector and civil society that the Festival is designed to foster.

Panel at the IPSA World Congress

Date/Location: 28th IPSA World Congress of Political Science, 12–16 July 2025, Coex Convention Center, Seoul, South Korea, held under the theme “Resisting Autocratization in Polarized Societies” and co-chaired by Prof. Irasema Coronado (Arizona State University) and Prof. Azul A. Aguiar Aguilar (Jesuit University of Guadalajara). The Centre’s main contribution was presented on Monday, 14 July 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., in Room 3F 318A, within panel RC36.05 “Environmental Governance and Power Dynamics: A Global Perspective” (Research Committee 36 – Political Power).

The Seoul edition was the most attended World Congress in IPSA’s 76-year history, with 3,450 participants; delegates from 95 countries presented 3,059 papers across 776 panels, plus four plenary sessions and six award sessions.

Description: Presentation of the paper “Tracing Meaningful Contexts and Analytical Patterns in the Development of Brazil’s National Human Rights and Business Policy: A Quest for Social Effectiveness and National Ownership”, by Claudia Marconi, Ana Carolina Girard Teixeira Cazetta and Rafael Miranda (all FECAP), which examines the construction of the Brazilian National Policy on Human Rights and Business, its social effectiveness and the question of national ownership of international BHR standards.

Preparatory Session for Academia, IX Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights for Latin America and the Caribbean

Date/Location: Wednesday, 9 April 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), São Paulo, Brazil. Session exclusively addressed to academia, held within the IX Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights for Latin America and the Caribbean, with organisational sponsorship of the Latin American Academy of Human Rights and Business (Academia Latinoamericana de Derechos Humanos y Empresas).

Description: The session covered teaching practices and capacity-building experiences on Business and Human Rights in Brazil, discussed urgent interdisciplinary research topics on the academic horizon and closed with a conversation with authors and a book launch. The Centre was involved in the academia session.

Instituto Ethos Business and Human Rights Working Group – “Human Rights: Brazilianness, Treaties and Geopolitics”

Prof. Rafael Miranda, Co-Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights at FECAP, participated as a guest speaker in the first 2025 meeting of Instituto Ethos’ Business and Human Rights Working Group, alongside Luiza Melo, Deputy Director at Instituto Ethos, and Scarlett Rodrigues, Human Rights Project Coordinator at Instituto Ethos.

The session examined Brazil’s role in the global landscape, its international commitments and the challenges of implementing human rights standards in a changing geopolitical context. Prof. Miranda discussed how national and international geopolitical and regulatory developments directly affect human rights from a business perspective, addressing their implications for corporate strategies, public policies and the broader Business and Human Rights agenda in Brazil.

The meeting provided the Centre with an opportunity for direct engagement with more than 100 companies associated with Instituto Ethos, strengthening dialogue between academia and the business sector and connecting the Centre’s research on international regulatory developments and Business and Human Rights with the practical challenges faced by companies operating in Brazil.

Cláudia Marconi, co-director of the Center, participated in the XI Symposium on International Law of GEDAI in the Panel IV “Agenda 2030 and International Law: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainability”, on December 5th, 2024.

Participation in the event “Brazil-EU Strategic Partnership: Business and Human Rights” — ESPM (EU Green Jean Monnet Chair)

On November 19, 2024, Co-director Cláudia Marconi participated in the event “Brazil-EU Strategic Partnership: Business and Human Rights” at ESPM (EU Green Jean Monnet Chair).

Participation in the seminar “Sustainability as a Value: From Bi-regional (EU-Mercosur) to Local Development”

On October 16, 2024, co-director Cláudia Marconi participated in the CEJM-UFMG and TCE-MG International Seminar on Panel V “Human Rights and Social Cohesion: Euro-Latin American Relations”.

Ethos 360° Conference São Paulo

At the Ethos 360° Conference São Paulo, Prof. Cláudia Marconi, Co-Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights at FECAP, took part in a panel organised by Instituto Ethos, alongside Carolina Pavese, a global governance specialist, consultant and professor at FIA. The panel addressed current geopolitical dynamics and their implications for Brazilian companies.

The session placed the Centre in direct dialogue with companies, business associations and civil society organisations gathered at one of the main corporate sustainability events in Brazil, reinforcing the connection between EU norm-making, the ESG agenda and responsible business conduct in and from Brazil.

At the same event, a panel brought together Clarice Tavares, Human Rights Coordinator at InternetLab; Viviane Lisboa, Coordinator of the Data Analytics Unit at Prodam; and Prof. Rafael Miranda, Co-Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on Business and Human Rights at FECAP.

Prof. Miranda addressed the relationship between artificial intelligence and human rights, arguing that technological development can also contribute to advancing human rights and equality. He stressed the importance of collaborative and multistakeholder approaches to developing solutions capable of addressing the human rights challenges associated with AI.

Participation in Europe Day Event

On May 9, 2024, the Delegation of the European Union hosted a Europe Day celebration at Varanda Estaiada, with the participation of Co-Director Cláudia Marconi.

Panel at the ISA International Convention

Date/Location: 65th Annual Convention of the International Studies Association (ISA), San Francisco, United States, 3–6 April 2024. The panel took place on Wednesday, 3 April 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., in room Union Square 18, Hilton San Francisco Union Square, within the Human Rights section (Session WD66).

Description: Panel “Business and Human Rights: the Global North and the Global South across the divide and the interplay”, organized and chaired by the CoE co-directors. The panel brought European and Latin American perspectives into direct dialogue, addressing the implementation of national action plans, human rights due diligence in global value chains and its application to emerging technologies, in line with the Centre’s emphasis on EU policy and norm-making and its impact on the Global South.

18th Annual IPPA Summit

Date/Location: Friday, 29 March 2024, New York University (Wagner), New York, United States. The Centre took part by invitation of the 18th Annual Summit of the International Policy & Planning Association (IPPA), entitled “Building a Sustainable World: Navigating Post-Pandemic Challenges, Climate Resilience, and Global Equity in International Development”.

Description: IPPA 2024 Summit serves as a platform for in-depth discussions between a diverse array of experts and the NYU community, all dedicated to addressing the most pressing issues in international development. The Summit allows for opportunities for networking and interactive discussions with fellow experts and graduate students. The sessions addressed the multifaceted aspects of international development, with a particular focus on sustainability and the global challenges posed by the aftermath of a global pandemic and the impacts of climate change.
