Biography

Paulo Borba Casella is a distinguished Professor of Public International Law at São Paulo University Law School (USP), holding the position of Full Professor since 2007. With a career spanning several decades, he has been an integral part of the USP faculty, commencing his teaching role in 1984. Casella earned his Law degree in 1982, followed by a Doctorate in International Law in 1986, and the title of “livre docente” in International Law in 1993, all from USP.

Throughout his tenure at USP, Professor Casella has held key leadership roles, including Deputy Director of the Law School from 2010 to 2014. He also served as the Head of the Department of International and Comparative Law during two separate terms, from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2018. Additionally, he contributed significantly as the head of the Publication Commission of the Law Journal of USP Law School.

Beyond his academic roles, Casella is the President of DWI – Institute for International Law and Relations of São Paulo, a position he has held since September 2018. As a practicing lawyer, he is admitted to the Brazilian Bar in São Paulo. Notably, he coordinated courses on International Law at the Higher School of the Brazilian Bar Association (ESA-OAB-SP) from May 2019 to June 2021.

Professor Casella’s commitment to research and academic initiatives is evident in his roles as the coordinator of CEPIM – Centre of Studies on the International Protection of Minorities at USP and as the coordinator of GEBRICS – Group of Studies on the BRICS at USP.

He has lectured at The Hague Academy of International Law.He was a candidate for the 2022 International Court of Justice judges election, nominated by the Brazilian National Group at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
